Someone had an opinion earlier as to how bad Fast and Loud is. And while I in no way, shape, or form disagree regarding F&L, I am a huge fan of one car show that I probably shouldn’t be: Counting Cars.
In not a completely different formula than the ones used by Fast, CC does do one thing different: the owner of the shop actually likes cars. While Rawlings is a salesman of cars, he is more salesman than enthusiasts. I remember one episode where he recounts that his family always said he “could sell a ketchup popsicle to a lady in white gloves”.
And while I think a general audience would chuckle at that and muse how great of a businessman he was destined to be, I was put off as a gearhead. It basically was the crux of his attitude towards the shop and his purpose with the business. Richard seemed to like cars in the sense that every jock seems to like cars: something to assert his self-proclaimed alpha credentials, with nary a clue running any deeper.
Danny on the other hand is a legitimate car guy it seems. Is it his knowledge that sets him apart? His enthusiasm? His automotive preferences? Not really, to some degree those things are all pretty much shared with Richard. No, it’s the way he treats the cars and the people on the show. Each car that rolls into his shop he treats as his. He believes in function as much as form, and he takes a loss on occasion to make sure his customers are happy. In other words, he’s passionate about what he does.
And that makes all the difference in the world. The show is infinitely more watchable, and I look forward to the reveals more than on any other car show. Because they’re usually emotional. And he shares in that. In one of the episodes he’s walking some customers through his personal collection and they make an offer on his mom’s car. He gets so choked up over just the thought of parting with it that he has to excuse himself. This is a man who cars permeate and punctuate every part of his life. And you know what? I love it.
So what car show do you like that you probably shouldn’t? I’ve shown my work for solution above, feel free to do the same.

Probably Graveyard Cars. I can’t say no to restoring old rare Mopars.

That was the Survivor of car shows.

I like Aron on Fast&Loud more than Richard. He seems to care more than Mr. Hairgelfetish (Richard)

He did, but he didn’t. I always saw him more as the tech that builds cool things, but then still rides home in his 90s Malibu because it isn’t worth the trouble beyond that.

It was the best. And the worst. Remember when they had an episode where only people with dwarfism were working on the car?

Very true. He at least knows how to do something other than burnouts and call for beer assistants.

I can’t recall that one. But it sounds like something James would do.

They were building a mini-truck. And my mistake, not everyone had dwarfism, but most of the team did.

You know what? I agree with you. I’ve always liked that show. What I don’t like, though, is its 30 minute time slot. They barely show any work being done on the car.

It definitely needed to be an hour show.

All things considered, Mighty Car Mods is way better and they’re on a tighter budget.

Yep CC for me. I record it so I can skip through the Mike/Roli bits

I don’t mind them too much. As far as supporting cast goes, they’re one of the better sets too.
